Mathias D.G. Nygård (vocals), Georg Laakso (guitar), Jussi Wickström (guitar), Mikko Törmikoski (bass), Antti Ventola (keyboards), Riku Ylitalo (keyboards), Tuomas Lehtonen (drums)

A Hämeenlinna based Folk Metal outfit forged by lead vocalist Mathias D.G. Nygård and guitarist Jussi Wickström during the Summer of 1997. In November of that year drummer Tuomas Lehtonen and guitarist Ari Kärkkäinen joined the band. This unit, at first billed as KÖYLIÖ, undertook rehearsals took place at Kärkkäinen's summer cottage where, according to the band, in between lazing in the sauna, they got drunk and, performing naked, delivered covers by MOTÖRHEAD, IRON MAIDEN and SEPULTURA. Their first recordings would come in the form of a rehearsal demo captured on a Roland 8-track mixer, 'Taiston Tie - The Battle Path', released in 1998 under the KÖYLIÖ brand.

In 1998 TURISAS boosted their numbers by the inclusion of keyboard player Antti Ventola and bassist Sami Aarnio. This incarnation of the band performed its first gig in early 1999, after which Aarnio decamped in order to join CADACROSS. Shortly after, Kärkkäinen too departed, being replaced by Georg Laasko of CADACROSS. In early 2000 Tino Ahola from CADACROSS and EMPYREAN BANE stepped on board to cover bass guitar.

A second gig was performed that May and then a demo 'The Heart Of Turisas' was laid down at Bayside Studios during July. Session musicians included female vocals courtesy of Nina Laakso with accordian donated by Riku Ylitalo and flute by Hanna Vasama. This session was subsequently issued in EP format. The band fared well in a national talent contest Ääni & Vimma, making it into the top ten. Ahola exited in 2001, being superseded by Mikko Törmikoski. Further changes in the line-up saw the incorporation of accordian player Riku Ylitalo, yet another member of CADACROSS.

TURISAS signed to the German Century Media label in 2003, cutting their debut album 'Battle Metal' with producer Terje Refsnes at the Sound Suite Studio in Marseille, France during November. The band severed ties with bassist Mikko Törmikoski in March of 2004.

In July the group came to the world's media attention when guitarist Georg Laakso was stabbed six times in the back times in the group's home town. Apparently Laakso was involved in an altercation outside a fast food restaurant, only discovering the extent of his injuries when later questioned at the police station. Although one wound was 10 cm deep, the guitarist was still ready for action for TURISAS' performance at the 'Tuska Rock' festival that same month.

TURISAS acted as direct support to DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER's February - March 2005 European tour. Bad luck hit the band in late October when guitarist Georg Laakso suffered severe injuries in a motor accident in Hämeenlinna, swerving off the road and through an elk fence. Unfortunately the incident was discovered until many hours later when emergency services discovered Laakso unconscious. The first police unit on the scene at 8 in the morning failed to spot Laakso, who had been thrown from the car, and it was only a further police squad arriving at 6 O'clock that evening that found him. This delay added frostbite to the guitarist's crash injuries. He would, still unconscious and in critical condition, be treated at Meilahti hospital in Helsinki.

During 2005 Tino Ahola forged a new Power Metal styled band billed TIMEKEEPER. TURISAS set out on the European touring circuit in the summer of 2006, announcing appearances at 'Bloodstock Open Air' in the UK and German festivals 'Dong Open Air', 'Party.San Open Air', 'Summerbreeze' and 'Hörnerfest'.

Georg Laakso, still suffering after effects from his car crash, confined to a wheelchair diagnosed with spinal cord injury, was forced to leave the band in July 2006. TURISAS acted as support to LORDI's 'Bringing Back The Balls To UK' British tour in October. Late the following month the band entered Sound Supreme Studios in Hämeenlinna together with co-producer !2007-05-05 19:26:30.000!0͸ÛÍ!ÈÛÍÈÛÍ쥎!0ÍèÛÍ!2007-05-07 00:00:00.000‘!Repack/Neuer Link***n Top 20
