MANITOU is a traditionally styled Progressive Heavy Metal band out of the Karhula suburb of Kotka, whose ranks feature members of OMNIUM GATHERUM in lead guitarist Markus Vanhala and keyboard player Jukka Perälä. Starting out with a different line-up MANITOU issued a succession of demo recordings in 'The Mad Moon Rising' of January 1999 and 'Mercenary', recorded at East Coast Recording Studios in Hamina by Mika Hytö in the same Summer. These sessions were cut by singer Markku Pihlaja, guitarist Turo Komulainen, bassist Ismo Laukkanen with Matti Suhonen. Although Antti Laurèn was also involved he would be prevented from appearing on the first set of tracks due to compulsary military service. 'Mercenary' marked the introduction of Jukka Perälä to the line-up.
'Machine Mind' and 'Face The Snake', the latter recorded at TaVi Studios Helsinki by Markku Pihlaja, both arrived during 2000. Subsequently second guitarist Turo Komulainen was replaced by Markus Vanhala. Further demos comprised 'Brothers Promise' of 2001 and 'The Valley Of Evergreen' released in 2002.
Frontman Markku Pihlaja also operates BARABBAS and KAIHORO, bassist Ismo Laukkanen is active with INSHADE and OLOS whilst drummer Matti Suhonen and guitarist Antti Laurén are also both members of OLOS. Valhala divides his duties further between GORE PENETRATION and MALPRACTICE.
The group signed to the British based Rage Of Achilles label for their 2004 debut album 'The Mad Moon Rising', recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki. MANITOU, OMNIUM GATHERUM, ELENIUM, AMORAL and KIUAS united for the November 2004 'Dead Achilles' tour of Finland.
MANITOU musicians Markus Vanhala, Antti Laurén and Ismo Laukkanen would form a one off backing band for ex-IRON MAIDEN singer PAUL DIANNO for his appearance at the 'Sirkkelirock Metal Awards' on 8th January 2005 at the Tavastia club in Helsinki. MANITOU's opening 2006 single, 'Fools In Control', featured a cover version of MICHAEL JACKSON's 'Beat It'. Metal Heaven Records issued the 'Deadlock' album across Europe in July. MANITOU announced they had severed ties with Firebox Records in December 2006.
MANITOU entered SouthEastSounds Studio in Karhula with producer Teemu Aalto in early March 2007 to record its third album 'No Signs Of Wisdom'. Mixing sessions took place at Studio Sound Supreme in Hämeenlinna with Janne Saksa.
