Peter Criss (real name; Peter Criscoula) joined KISS in 1972, having placed an ad in Rolling Stone with the immortal line 'Drummer willing to do anything to make it'. Previous to KISS, Criss had recorded a solitary album with New York group CHELSEA in 1970 and had played in a variety of bands including the BARRACUDAS and THE BROTHERHOOD in his native Brooklyn, New York.
Along with the other members of KISS, Criss cut a solo album in 1978. After originally wanting producer Tom Dowd involved in the project, the drummer persuaded former Vini Poncia to produce the record. The resulting album was the furthest away from the traditional KISS sound, Criss choosing to concoct an album of R&B tunes and balladry in partnership with his old pal Stan Penridge, a member of the last line-up of CHELSEA.
Poncia roped in a number of session musicians to complete the project, including TOTO guitarist STEVE LUKATHER.
By the time the album was released the drummer had become extremely dissatisfied with his role in the band. Since the success of his ballad 'Beth' in 1976, Criss became frustrated that -even though one of his songs had given KISS their biggest hit to date - his role as a songwriter was being stifled. Consequently, Criss would play a minimal role in the recording of KISS' new studio album for 1979, 'Dynasty', and no part in the recording of the subsequent 'Unmasked' after which the group and Criss parted company.
Following his split from the ranks (although he remained an equal partner in KISS for some years afterwards) Peter teamed up with his old sparring partner Stan Penridge to work on his first, post KISS solo album. 1980's 'Out Of Control' saw Criss on lead vocal and drums alongside guitarists Stan Penridge and David Wolfert, bassists Stu Woods and Tony Mercandante and keyboard players Benny Harrison and Ed Walsh. The record was pretty much a continuation of the styles displayed on the 1978 KISS solo.
Criss returned in 1982 with the heavier 'Let Me Rock You' was fortified by such guest contributions from Lukather once again and the then unknown guitarist Steve Stevens., later to find fame and fortune with BILLY IDOL. The album also featured the Gene Simmons penned 'Feels Like Heaven', but was only ever released in Holland and Germany; Criss for years claiming that his former band mates had prevented PolyGram issuing the record in America.
Following the record's release, Criss put together the CRISS-PENRIDGE ALLIANCE with Stan Penridge. A promotion EP is rumoured to exist.
During the 80s Criss made the odd appearance on a number of other albums, primarily through his fame as an original member of KISS. Two of note are singing back up vocals on BLACK N' BLUE's 'In Heat' album and also KING KOBRA's 'III' release. Criss also guested on ex KISS colleague Ace Frehley's 'Trouble Walking' album in 1989.
At one time there existed the possiblity of Criss releasing a record of his own through KING KOBRA drummer CARMINE APPICE's's custom Rocker Records label. Such plans came to naught as Peter tended to drift from one project to another, including a spell with the female fronted BALLS OF FIRE. This band found Criss uniting with vocalist Jane Booke, guitarist J.P. and bassist Bob Laylove. BALLS OF FIRE split with the departure of Booke to an abortive solo deal with Modern Records in 1988.
Fans would be shocked in January of 1991 when the 'The Star' tabloid reported that Peter Criss was a homeless derelict now residing under a bridge in Santa Monica, California. Criss appeared on the Phil Donahue television show in February to refute these allegations. As it transpired, the culprit was a man named Christopher Dickinson had been using Peter's name and identity for many years. On a more constructive note, the ex-KISS drummer put together a new band project in 1991 with ex-CHAIN REACTION, 24K and TALAS vocalist PHIL NARO, but this was short lived.
