"I staaaay to watch you fade awaaay": at the start of 2002 all of Denmark was singing along to a Saybia song, which was a national smash hit and convinced the doubters once and for all that the band possessed a very special popular appeal.
Saybia was formed in Nyborg in 1993, but when the trio became a quintet in 1998 they moved to Copenhagen, where they sought a slightly larger musical space in which to raise the roof.
And they certainly did that; Saybia rapidly became one of the country's most popular live acts, and the two home-made EPs that the group brought with them around the country were snapped up at their concerts.
In 2001 came Saybia's first commercial release, the EP "Saybia", which included the songs "Fools' Corner" and "The Day After Tomorrow". These were much played on the Danish P3 radio station, and won the group the year's P3 Prize – despite the fact that several critics thought Saybia was a touch too reminiscent of bands like Radiohead, Travis and Coldplay.
Such criticism was however disregarded by their growing flock of Danish fans, who saw in Søren Huus's unfettered vocals and melancholically beautiful melodies the future of Danish rock music – and the readers of the Danish music magazine Gaffa agreed when they voted Saybia "New Danish Name of the Year".
Saybia received their final stamp of approval when they won a Danish Music Award for "Rock Release of the Year"; an honour which for the first time was given for an EP. This provided valuable publicity for the album ’The Second You Sleep’, which went straight to the number one slot in the Danish charts on its release in 2002.
Saybia's enormous success made the band even more in demand, so intensive tours of Denmark and the rest of Europe followed in the wake of the release of "The Second You Sleep". However, the constant touring took its toll on the group's internal relations, to the point that they considered disbanding.
But the band resolved their conflicts and rediscovered their creative spark, and in January 2004 they were back in the studio; this time in Visby, Gotland, to record the follow-up to "The Second You Sleep". This was given the title "These Are The Days" and was released on 13 September of that year; a week later it was number one in Denmark, and made the top ten in both the Netherlands and Switzerland.
