New Brunswick, New Jersey spearhead Emo-Hardcore act THURSDAY's first
impressions were made with the Sal Villanueva produced album 'The Waiting',
issued in December 1999 by Eyeball Records. The band had been formulated during
1997, comprising singer Geoff Rickly, guitarists Tom Keeley and Bill Henderson,
bassist Tim Payne and drummer Tucker Rule. THURSDAY's musical ambitions proved
eclectic, instilling a NYHC heritage with the maudlin tones of British
Gothic-Pop laden with discordant and unpredictable guitar threads. Another
standout feature would be frontman Geoff Rickly, not only in possession of a
distinctive vocal style but also able to imbue his lyrics with a rare depth. The
UK influences would even extend to homage to a track from 'The Waiting'
dedicated to JOY DIVISION's mentor 'Ian Curtis'.
The formula served the band well as Chicago's prominent Victory snapped the band
up for a second album. With a more effective marketing machine behind them
THURSDAY, having fleetingly employed WE'RE BROKEN NOW guitarist Frank Giokas,
broke into mainstream national radio with the track 'Understanding In A Car
Crash' from the October 2001 'Full Collapse' album, once again produced by Sal
Villanueva. A live EP, 'Five Stories Falling', arrived the following year.
The group's trajectory took a further swift upward curve with a switch of label
to major outfit Island Records. The conceptual 'War All The Time', holding a
common theme of the poetry of Charles Bukowski, emerged in September 2003.
THURSDAY entered the recording studio in November 2005 with producer Dave
Fridmann to cut a new album.
The band toured the USA packaged with MINUS THE BEAR, WE'RE ALL BROKEN and THE
NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU in March 2006. That May the group issued new album
'A City By The Light Divided', preceded by the single 'Counting 5-4-3-2-1'. The
band joined the gargantuan 2006 'Warped' festival tour that summer, this trek
lasting through June 16th in Columbia, Maryland, winding its way through the USA
and Canada and concluding on August 14th in Montreal. Headline shows in
September and October would be backed by RISE AGAINST.
