“The Witching Hour” is the 4’th album from US based Yoke Shire. Mind you this is a beautiful dobb.cd set, with over 80 min. of delightful music. They are now a duo in which brothers Herlihy plays all instruments. A statement from the liner-notes:” As always Yoke Shire takes an organic approach to playing and recording our music using only genuine musical instruments”. The album is also graced with a vintage 1960’s Hammond organ. It was recorded at Gateway Studio, (mastering) engineered by Adam Ayan (award winner actually) who have worked with among others; Rush-A Perfect Circle-Phish-Stones to name a few. And believe me when I say that the sound to this album is outstanding. Craig Herlihy’s production is out of this world beautiful. Even though I loved “Masque Of Shadows” this is even better, greater and a more sophisticated album. Filled to the brim with an amazing sound, great & beautiful symphonic (psych and a medieval approach as well on cd.1) rock and their spacey sound ala Pink Floyd is still intact. (Think of: Atom Heart Mother/Meddle/Dark Side Of The Moon/Wish You Were Here, and beyond.)The instrumentation on this album is fantastic. So many different instruments played with perfection; Electric & acoustic guitars, keyboards, Hammond organ, flute, sax, mandolin, Theremin, glockenspiel, marimba, percussion, drums and bass (4 strings Rickenbacker 4001). The tracks flows ever so brightly, like puppets on a string, with breaks upon breaks, beyond your wildest dreams. This is one of the most remarkable albums recorded in the last 50 years.
It has taken about 4 years to make “The Witching Hour”. I’ve had my copy for only 4 weeks and it has not left my cd player yet (will not for a very long time, that’s for sure). Mainly because I consider it to be one of the best albums ever recorded. The Herlihy brother is outstanding musicians and great composers. Their ear for “melody” is remarkable. Almost every track starts out very gentle, then they kind of build them up very slowly, (every tiny little tone matters here, have importance so to speak), let the music talk to you, let you fell it. The guitars by the Herlihy brother are awesome, both electric & acoustic ones. Craig Herlihy’s vocal are unique. I can’t think of any other artist that sounds like him!?! His voice is thick (Zappa comes to mind!?!) and so delightful to listen to. Brother Brian takes care of the backing vocals with greatness. There are besides the Floyd influence traces of Tull (still) as well, but I think that’s because Craig plays the flute, in the more prog/ folk/medieval alike tracks on the first cd. Another amazing thing here is the drumming, by Craig H. It’s outstanding. WOW, what a gifted musician he is. It’s very hard for me to actually “write” about this album, mainly because I think most tracks a very complex/different/unique in its approach. The actual “feel” to this album is something every proghead should feel on his/her own skin, so to speak. There are so many amazing things to explore/experience on “The Witching Hour”. So many marvellous compositions/tunes/melodies. A musicianship out of the ordinary. If I should put any words to it, it would go something like this: You’ll find the fallow-up to Floyd’s “Breathe” & “On The Run”, “longer versions” of Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” & Ramble On” and some great psychedelic tunes ala Iron Butterfly. This is one album that gives hope for progressive rock/ music. If you are a fan of Floyd-Tull-Zeppelin-Iron Butterfly- Santana ect. you are sure to get a big kick out of this fantastic album. Can’t think of any other band that has such a great potential. I think it’s fantastic what the Herlihy brothers have achieved with their new album.
