The MR. BIG guitarist issued his debut solo album, 'King Of Clubs', in the latter half of 1997. Co-produced by the guitarist with his former RACER X colleague Bruce Bouillet Gilbert sings lead and contributes all instruments with additional contributions from Bouillet and ex-RACER X bassist John Alderete, drums from RACER X and BADLANDS man Jeff Martin and MR. BIG's Pat Torpey. Backing vocals would be donated by THE SZUTERS frontman Mike Szuter. The album was re-issued by Mayhem Records in the United States and Europe in 1998.
Gilbert also put in an appearance on LOUDNESS guitarist AKIRA TAKASAKI's 1996 solo set 'Respirator' as well as on Jazz pioneer JEFF BERLIN's 'Crossroads' album. The guitarist issued a further solo album in 1998 'Flying Dog' before officially announcing his departure from MR. BIG, his place being taken by ex-POISON man RICHIE KOTZEN.
A Japanese tour saw Gilbert's live band comprising of Martin on drums, bassist Mike Szuter, keyboard player Scott Johnson and second guitarist Bill Morris formerly of KID WICKED. These shows resulted in the 'Beehive Live' album.
1999 found Gilbert & Martin reforming RACER X with the original line up (including drummer Scott Travis on loan from JUDAS PRIEST) for the 'Technical Difficulties' album. The guitarist also toured America with his guitar clinic show and put in a solo performance at the prestigious Montreux Jazz festival with Martin and Szuter. Morris meantime teamed up with WARRANT.
In 2000 Gilbert collaborated with DOKKEN vocalist DON DOKKEN to record the soundtrack for a Japanese cartoon series. The following year would find him aiding DOKKEN bassist JEFF PILSON on his WAR AND PEACE side project album 'Light At The End Of The Tunnel'.
The guitarist forged the PAUL GILBERT & JIMI KIDD union for a 2001 album 'Raw Blues Power'.
Gilbert got back to work on his own 2002 solo effort 'Burning Organ' re-enlisting Mike Szuter on bass and Marco Minnemann on drums. The following year a Japanese compilation, 'Paul The Young Dude', was to feature previously unheard tracks ''I'm Not Afraid Of The Police', ''The Second Loudest Guitar In The World' and a cover version of CAROLE KING's ''I Feel The Earth Move'. Initial copies came with a second acoustic disc entitled 'Gilbert's Hotel', featuring renditions of 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' by GENESIS and ENUFF Z'NUFF's 'Time To Let You Go'. The guitarist would be back on tour in Japan that June. His touring band on this occasion comprised vocalists Kate Gilbert and Heather Dotson, bassist Linus of Hollywood, second guitarist and BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION drummer Scot Coogan.
Gilbert would participate in two 'Guitar Wars' shows in Tokyo and Osaka in August and September of 2003 pitched against former EXTREME guitarist NUNO BETTENCOURT and GENESIS veteran STEVE HACKETT. This trio was subsequently joined by the esteemed personage of ex-LED ZEPPELIN bassist JOHN PAUL JONES. November found the guitarist forming up the LED ZEPPELIN all star tribute band HAMMER OF THE GODS at the Montreal Drum festival, his colleagues on this occasion being PAIN OF SALVATION vocalist Daniel Gildenlöw, DIXIE DREGS and PLANET X bassist Dave LaRue and DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy.
Gilbert followed up this release with the quick fire 'Acoustic Samurai' album. Initially only issued in Japan, but subsequently picked up by Mascot Records for Europe, the record captured live acoustic run throughs of solo material, RACER X tracks, a cover of ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' and the song 'Maybe I'll Die Tomorrow' written for a Japanese Samurai movie. The guitarist also indulged himself in a further tribute album, this time cutting guitar tracks for a version of IRON MAIDEN's 'The Evil That Men Do' as part of a studio band comprising WWF wrestling champion and FOZZY frontman Chris Jericho on vocals, Mike Inez of ALICE IN CHAINS and Brent Fitz from VINCE NEIL's band on drums.
