In December 2003 the highly respected frontman with Florida's Metal institution SAVATAGE and the hugely successful TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, the "Mountain king" Jon Oliva, was out on the solo trail initially billed as THE JON OLIVA PROJECT. His musicians, guitarist Matt Laporte, bass player Kevin Rothney, keyboard player John Zahner and drummer Christopher Kinder, had only just exited en masse under acrimonious circumstances from former SAVATAGE singer Zak Stevens CIRCLE II CIRCLE project. In February 2004 Oliva's endeavour had taken on the new guise of TAGE MAHAL.
The band, working with producer Greg Marchak, entered Audio Lab Studios to cut their debut record for SPV Records. Guesting would be former SAVATAGE drummer Steve "Dr. Killdrums" Walcholz, who recorded two songs. Oliva himself took some time out to act as producer for Tampa act AFTER DEATH's 'Reviving The Gods' demo.
The venture evolved into JON OLIVA'S PAIN in August due to the discovery of a long standing European Blues artist laying claim to the former title. On the live front the group debuted live at the 'Progpower USA V' festival on 16th September in Atlanta, Georgia.
The opening 'Tage Mahal' album would be revealed as constituting the first in a three part saga, with a later box set scheduled to include all three albums, a live DVD, along with live and studio outtakes from both the recording sessions and the tours which followed. JON OLIVA'S PAIN debuted live on 11th December at the Boomerz Boiler Room venue in Seminole, Florida, this gig preceding a three night stand in Greece.
In 2005 the group united with ex-JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens band BEYOND FEAR and the solo band of SAVATAGE and TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA guitarist CHRIS CAFFERY for US live dates commencing 9th September in Cleveland. JON OLIVA'S PAIN revealed work was underway on a second album, billed 'Maniacal Renderings - Chapter 2'.
Guitarist Jerry Outlaw was ousted in January 2006, being replaced by ex-TEER and CIRCLE II CIRCLE man Shane French. JON OLIVA'S PAIN undertook European summer touring supported by Italian act ELVENKING. The group signed to AFM Records for a new album billed 'Maniacal Renderings'.
Summer European touring included a run of acoustic shows in Germany throughout June before festival appeances at the 'Rock Harz Open Air' and 'Earthshaker Fest' shows in Germany, 'Metal Camp' in Slovenia and Spanish 'Metal Way' events in Madrid and Guernika. An EP, entitled 'Straight Jacket Memoirs', arrived in July hosting two live tracks and three non album tracks. Jon Oliva also guested on German Heavy Metal band SAIDIAN's 'Phoenix' album. JON OLIVA'S PAIN's second album 'Maniacal Renderings' arrived in September, hitting the German charts at number 86. Whilst in promotion for this outing Jon Oliva admitted that SAVATAGE was no more and that the JON OLIVA'S PAIN albums contained material originally intended for use as SAVATAGE.
In November JON OLIVA'S PAIN guitarist Matt LaPorte released his debut solo album, entitled 'Once Again...With Feeling'.
April 2007 European and UK tour dates for JON OLIVA'S PAIN saw support coming from AFM Records label mates HEAVENLY and NOSTRADAMEUS.
