You ever wonder what would happen if The Haunted didn’t suck, infused a lot more death and technical influences (probably from Amoral), and had a more typical thrash input? They would probably sound like Revocation.

Revocation (formerly Cryptic Warning) are a death thrash band with a technical edge and ample amounts of modern thrash and aggro elements to their music. They’re not insanely complex or ultra technical, nor do they resemble the old school thrash movement popular today, nor are they as brutal as modern death metal, but they put out modern metal that’s not overly sterile and in the range of speed that hits Goldilock’s “just right” category.

For the most part, the riffs are a mix of The Haunted’s melody with technically adept solos that run the gamut from all over the metal spectrum. Vocally Revocation is nothing special, opting for a yelping growl that serves the music appropriately (though will later break into guttural emissions at just the right moments). The drums are well structured, refraining from overzealous showmanship and needless speed. And frankly I’m finding this a lot more entertaining than their previous output as Cryptic Warning.

Don’t come in here expecting to be given something ultra technical. This is technical like Amoral is technical: it’s complex and well played, but it’s not out to reformat reality with riff-crunching madness. Frankly, there’s enough bands already doing that. If simply you want something solid and diverse with technical chops, Revocation’s Empire of the Obscene will supply you with what you need.
