David Gilmour - Live In Gdansk (2008) DVD5/9 PAL

Between the appearance of Live in Gdansk and the death of Richard Wright lay only a few days. On Monday, September 15, 2008, the founding member of the legendary psychedelic art rock legend succumbed to a cancer treatment at the age of only 65 years. Now the calls of a (superfluous) reunion of the British band are finally silenced, but also the eternal keyboards of the quiet and timid of the Floyd, who also sang and composed. Here they can be heard again, imposingly framed by the backdrop of the shipyard of Gdansk, supported by the Baltic Symphony Orchestra or Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. The centerpiece of the show in August 2006 is, of course, the unmistakeable guitar play by David Gilmour, whose voice weakens not only on songs such as the Syd Barrett tribute "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". A few months before, the show was a bit different in the grandiose - shows at London's Royal Albert Hall. The live selection of Live in Gdansk is largely in line with the three Albert Hall performances, but the magic is missing despite detailed and crystal-clear sounds. This is not the case for Richard Wright, who is expected to have a final solo album. Classics like "Echoes", "Astronomy Domine" or "Comfortably Numb" get their geniality only through their key play. He will not be replaced for Gilmour, the two of them were close friends and musically almost telepathically connected. Wright was considered the heart of Pink Floyd, his input was underestimated. The concert, documented from a double CD to a vinyl box in different formats with partially opulent bonus material, has become his involuntary legacy. Therefore, the negative criticism of a few tracks should be silenced at this point.
